For over 20 years I have worked within various positions both in the corporate and educational sector. Throughout my journey, I have witnessed how trusting and respectful relationships, humanistic leadership, and effective communication are the key to the success of any partnership, team and family, and the productivity and financial gain of any organisation.

 

The ability to experience successful relationships comes from the way an individual sees themselves, the experiences they've had in life and the belief systems they've grown up with. While there are people who champion personal development that enhances relationship harmony, there are many others who are not aware of this or the types of limitations they have placed around themselves that have actually held them back from experiencing true connection or their full potential for a very long time.

Why Coaching?

We have all experienced times in our lives where we have felt stuck, a little off, lost, unable to connect or where our many best laid plans have not led us towards the outcome we've wanted or expected no matter how hard we've tried. Sometimes we've felt that therapy is not quite what we needed either but we cannot put our finger on what else might help.

This is where coaching comes in. The coaching relationship is a strong and effective partnership between the coach and client where the client is galvanised to move from where they are to where they want to be and focuses on HOW they are going to get there. The partnership works because it views the client as experts of their lives and trusts that the client knows what is best for them. Through regular coaching sessions, clients are supported in exploring what holds them back from moving forward and helps them generate insights about themselves and their situations, while also create meaningful goals and strategies that they are then held accountable for.

Type of Coaching

The framework of coaching I use is based on Core Energy Coaching, which was created by Bruce D Schneider, founder of iPEC. It begins with a simple premise: All people are continually experiencing energy, in one of two ways, catabolic or anabolic energy, Neither is good nor bad, better nor worse, but each has advantages and disadvantages and both energies serve a powerful purpose. â€‹

Anabolic energy is constructive, expanding, fuelling, and creative, and works for a person. Conversely, catabolic energy is destructive, draining, or resisting and works against a person. The type of energy we experience fluctuates throughout the day and inside of situations. However, because of our attitude and the way we interpret our life experiences, we wind up experiencing the same type of energy over and over again.  As many people get stuck in draining, catabolic energy, I am trained to help them raise their energy levels and become more aware of their actions and choices. As a result of this shift to anabolic energy, they’re more apt to inspire others, more open to innovation and possibility, and far better able to pursue goals and find fulfilment in all aspects of their lives. I also use the Energy Leadership Index™ Assessment, which accurately measures a person's available energy, how they respond on a typical day vs how they tend to respond when faced with a stressor. The assessment reveals the type of coaching approach that would best suit the client and sets the tone for the coming sessions.

Coaching or Counselling? 

I am often asked about the differences between counselling and coaching with some people believing that they are one and the same. While there is crossover among the tools, techniques and frameworks that are used, the biggest difference is in the nature of the sessions. Counsellors/therapists will usually help clients heal by delving into deeply rooted emotional issues from their past and figuring out the 'why' behind that. They might also help clients fix problems, build emotional skills and manage mental health challenges among other things. Coaches on the other hand focus on 'how' the client presents today, and helps them understand and release what is blocking their progress or success towards their overarching goal. At the end of each session there is always an actionable item that they are held accountable for, which keeps them moving forward.  While raising self-awareness is a key aspect of my coaching, I go only where the client takes me. This can really help a client feel in control of the session itself and of what they share. Having said that, if the client is struggling to achieve success or their goals, then we will eventually need to understand how the past continues to affect their present with the focus on moving forward. If what they share reveals that deeper healing must take place, then counselling or psychotherapy might be recommended.
